Dinos earn road sweep of Cougars

REGINA – A goal in each period paced the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team to a 3-1 victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday at The Co-operators Centre.

The win is Calgary's fourth in a row as they sit tied for second with a 6-3-0-1 record in the West Division in Canada West. Meanwhile, it is the fourth consecutive loss for Regina, who has just one win through 10 games this season.

After a slow start offensively on Friday, the Dinos got their attack going quickly in the second game of the weekend. With seven minutes left in the first period, Max Patterson skated in from the right side and curled a shot past a defender and through Cougars goaltender Adam Evanoff.

The Dinos doubled their lead at the 7:09 mark of the second period. Jake Gricius was well-positioned in the defensive zone and broke up a scoring opportunity for the Cougars. As the play went the other way, Tyson Galloway sent the puck on goal, and Gricius was right there to tap it into the net.

Calgary cashed in on the power play to make it 3-0 early in the third period. The Dinos cycled the puck well and had the Cougars hemmed in their zone when Connor Gutenberg wired a wrist shot from atop the right faceoff circle.

Logan Barlage got Regina on the scoreboard and broke up Carl Tetachuk's shutout bid at the 10:24 mark of the third period.

Tetachuk finished the evening with 21 saves, while Evanoff stopped 35 chances.

With the win, Dinos head coach Mark Howell tied former Calgary head coach and Dinos Hall of Famer George Kingston for the most conference wins in program history with 245.

The Dinos remain on the road next weekend and make their second trip to Vancouver to face the UBC Thunderbirds, while Regina will host the Alberta Golden Bears on Nov. 15-16.
