Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Dinos Communications

Late flurry sends Bisons past Dinos

WINNIPEGAmelia Awad racked up a season-high 35 saves, but the Manitoba attack proved to be too much in a 4-1 win over the Dinos women's hockey team Saturday afternoon from Wayne Fleming Arena.

Manitoba moves to 8-3-1 on the year, while Calgary falls to 6-6-2.

Awad was incredible in the first. The third-year goalie from Halifax stopped everything thrown at her in the first 20 minutes, racking up 17 saves in the first period alone to keep things scoreless after one.

The first goal of the game came on an unlucky bounce for the Dinos early in the second. Manitoba was on a power play and a Dinos' injury gave them a brief 5-3 advantage. Dana Goertzen aimed far post on a pass that took a deflection and the bouncing puck fell to the stick of Aimee Patrick, who backhanded it home for the 1-0 lead 2:09 into the second.

Later in the frame, Norah Collins looked to double up the Bisons' lead with a point-blank shot, but Awad was up to the challenge with the quick reflexes to make the save and keep Calgary close.

A few minutes later, Manitoba once again benefited from a fortunate deflection before finishing with some impressive stick work to make it 2-0. Camille Enns carried the puck into the zone and tried to dump it deep, but the puck connected with the linesman and bounced right back to a suddenly uncovered Enns. She sent a centering pass to Julia Bird, who made a perfect move from her forehand to her backhand to beat Awad and make it 2-0 late in the second.

One of the best chances of the game for Calgary came in the closing seconds of the second. Sophia Zuck patrolled the attacking zone with the puck, weaved through the defence and sent a great feed to Jess Martens who had two cracks at it, but a combination of goaltender Emily Shippam and Manitoba defenders got their sticks in the way to keep the clean sheet in tact.

Collins potted a pair in the third to give the home squad a 4-0 advantage.

Rebecca Clarke spoiled the shutout with her fourth goal of the season, perfectly placing a shot far post to close out the scoring in this one. Emma Tait picked up her third assist in as many games on the goal for Calgary.

Awad finished the day with a season-high 35 saves. Shippam made 21 saves in net for the Bisons to pick up the win.

Calgary's attack generated just 22 shots on the day – with 11 coming in the final period, while the Bisons fired 39 shots on frame – 30 coming in the first 40 minutes.

The Dinos remain on the road next weekend, traveling to Langley, B.C. for an important close to the first semester with two games against Trinity Western. Both games are scheduled for 2 p.m. MT puck drops.
