CALGARY – The Calgary Dinos women's basketball team jumped out to a 22-2 lead and never looked back for a 76-34 win over MacEwan Friday night from the Jack Simpson Gym.
Neither team shot the ball particularly well in this one, but the Dinos built a 42-7 lead at the half and outscored the Griffins by seven in the second half to move to 3-2 on the young season. The loss sends MacEwan to 0-3.
Calgary's defensive pressure all night proved to be the difference, forcing 37 turnovers and converting that into 39 points to coast to their third win in a row at home to start the year.
"It's great to win, first of all, but I think we were just a little frustrated with the way we responded to some of the things that we were discussing at half time that we wanted to come out and deliver," Calgary head coach
Damian Jennings said postgame. "Particularly, some offensive execution that would have helped us make some better shot selections that would have put us in some less problematic situations defensively – a little frustrated by that, but ultimately we got better at a few things and we have plenty to work on."
The Dinos came out of the gates firing.
Amélie Collin and
Mya Proctor quickly put their team on the board and it was 10-0 Calgary before almost no time had come off the clock. Jennings' squad shot 47 percent (8-17) overall in the first and held MacEwan to just 1-8 from the floor for a 22-2 lead after 10 minutes.
It was much of the same in the second. Calgary cooled off but still went 7-21 in the second and limited the Griffins to just 2-12 shooting, outscoring the visitors 20-5 in the second stanza to jump to a 42-7 lead at the break.
MacEwan was able to right the ship a little after the break. Though the game was already seemingly decided, the Griffins battled back, forcing 20 Dinos' turnovers on the night – the vast majority coming in the final 20 minutes.
Collin finished the night with a game-high 21 points on 7-10 shooting – including an impressive 5-8 showing from three – to go with seven steals and two assists.
Myriam Kone added 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals, while
Louise Rouse was also in double figures with 12 points and six rebounds.
Allie Spenrath had a team-high 10 points to lead the way for MacEwan.
The two teams are right back at it Saturday at 4 p.m. again from the Jack Simpson Gym.
