CALGARY – The Calgary Dinos women's basketball team finished off the weekend sweep of MacEwan Saturday afternoon with an 88-32 win inside the Jack Simpson Gym.
The Dinos were once again dominant right from the start, jumping out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter and never looking back.
"We were way more clinical tonight defensively (compared to Friday)," Dinos head coach
Damian Jennings said. "I was really pleased with the, not necessarily adjustments, but the focus that we had from night one to night two."
"Last night, we were a bit disappointed with the way we performed technically, and also tactically in some ways. So, I was really pleased with how clinical we were at the defensive end. I think that showed from the beginning."
Calgary flexed some offensive muscle early on in the first quarter with a total of 17 points before MacEwan made it onto the board. Turnovers once again played a significant role in this one, with the Dinos forcing 18 MacEwan turnovers in the first quarter alone, with
Myriam Kone setting the tone right out of the gate with a steal and a score to lift the lid just 13 seconds in.
In the second quarter, MacEwan picked up the pace and had their strongest showing of the weekend. Morgan Clark started things off with a jumper for two of her eight points in the frame, finishing just four points shy of Calgary in the quarter as the Dinos built a 38-17 lead at the break.
Calgary continued to dominate after the break, holding the Griffins to just 15 points over the final 20 minutes.
Four Dinos finished the night in double figures in scoring, with Amelie Collin and
Louise Rouse finishing with 17 points each to lead the way.
Lilia Skumatova added 11 points on 3-5 shooting, while Kone added another 10 to go with five steals.
Clark tallied a team-high 13 points for the Griffins, while Samantha Hickey chipped in with a game-high eight rebounds.
Both teams will now continue on the road next weekend. Calgary is off to Vancouver to take on UBC, while MacEwan heads to Winnipeg to battle the Wesmen.
