Shorthanded Dinos blanked by Cougars

CALGARY – Robbie Holmes scored the lone goal Saturday night as the Mount Royal Cougars shut out the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team 1-0 at Father David Bauer Arena.

The Cougars maintain their perfect record and improve to 6-0 on the young season, while the Dinos have hit a skid recently and are 2-3-1.

The Dinos generated the first scoring chance of the night, with Dylan Sydor making a couple of early attempts at the goal. Jake Poole and Max Patterson also joined the attack, creating chances that kept Shane Farkas busy in the Cougars' net. The reigning goaltender of the year finished the evening with 21 saves.

Mount Royal lit the lamp with the game's only goal mid-way through the first period. Cycling the puck on a power play, Connor Bouchard fired the puck just off from the blue paint, where Holmes was well positioned to redirect it through.

With only 15 skaters, fatigue and frustration crept in for the Dinos in the final 40 minutes of the game. Calgary's offence was limited in the second period as the Mount Royal defence held the home side to only two shots.

A bright spot for the Dinos on Saturday was the play of their penalty kill and defence. With 37 minutes in penalties, Calgary was shorthanded six times and held Mount Royal to only one goal. Dinos goaltender Carl Tetachuk made 30 saves.

"We really gave it our all, even though we had a short lineup tonight. We just need to improve our power plays to create more scoring opportunities," said Tetachuk.

The Dinos will look to regroup next weekend when they host the Trinity Western Spartans, while the Mount Royal Cougars will take on the Saskatchewan Huskies. Both matchups begin Friday, Oct. 25.
