Anderson's hat trick fuels sweep of Huskies

SASKATOON – Brooklyn Anderson scored all three goals for the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team as they defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1 and swept their two-game set at Merlis Belsher Place.

Anderson, who joined the Dinos after beginning her university career with the Trinity Western Spartans, now has five goals through four games this season. Her efforts helped the Dinos improve to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Huskies fell to 0-3-1.

Calgary opened the scoring Saturday with five minutes left in the first period. Anderson walked into the slot, skating in from the left side, and rifled a shot that beat Huskies goaltender Colby Wilson's glove side.

The Huskies responded minutes later. Paris Oleksyn found Kaylee Hill streaming down the middle of the ice. Hill made one move before going to the backhand and slid the puck just under the glove of Dinos netminder Amelia Awad.

The Dinos retook the lead late in the middle frame when Anderson netted her second of the game on a two-on-one rush. Kyla Mitenko spotted her linemate racing through centre and set her up with time and space to backhand the puck past Wilson.

Awad faced her stiffest test during the third period when Saskatchewan recorded 13 shots on goal. Despite some quality chances, Anderson collected the only goal of the stanza, as she put the puck into the empty net with a long-range shot from her own zone to complete the hat trick.

The Dinos return to Calgary next weekend for a home-and-home set versus the Mount Royal Cougars, while the Huskies will host the Alberta Pandas. Both matchups begin on Friday, Oct. 18.
