Dinos hand Cougars first loss of season

CALGARY – Brette Kerley netted the game-winning goal as the University of Calgary Dinos extended their win streak to three games with a 3-1 decision over the Mount Royal Cougars at Father David Bauer Arena.

Coming off a road sweep of the Saskatchewan Huskies, the Dinos now improve to 3-1-1 through five games this season. The defeat Friday was the first of the year for Mount Royal as they slipped to 4-1-0.

With their first shot of the game just over five minutes into the contest, Calgary opened the scoring. First-year defender Madelynne Nafziger found the back of the net with a low shot from the blue line that found its way through several bodies. The goal was the first of the rookie's Canada West career.

Kerley provided the insurance marker in the early part of the middle frame. Kerley and Jolie Nafziger weaved their way into the offensive zone before a backpass to Kerley set her up with time and space to release a lethal wrist shot that beat the Mount Royal goaltender.

The game remained 2-0 until late in the third period when Lyvia Butz gave the Cougars some life.

It ended up being the only goal surrendered by Calgary netminder Amelia Awad, who finished the evening with 21 saves.

Brooklyn Anderson capped off the night with her conference-leading sixth goal of the season, getting deposited into an empty net.

"Our team came ready for the challenge today, and they all elevated their play; we set a new bar for 40 minutes of that game. Our group did a great job around our rookies today, and we continue to push and build off those celebrations of them," explained Dinos head coach Josh Gosling. "Our culture has shown, and our group has shown that it doesn't matter who is on the ice, everybody is pushing each other. We want to keep growing and developing, and we know they will come hard tomorrow, so we need to be ready for that."

The Dinos and Cougars will lace them up again on Saturday with a rematch at Flames Community Arenas. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m.
