CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team completed a sweep of the Crowchild Classic on Friday night, defeating the nationally-ranked Mount Royal Cougars 4-2 at Flames Community Arenas.
The win positions the Dinos well heading into the final weeks of the Canada West season. With two games left to play, Calgary holds a record of 11-13-2 and are seven points ahead of the Manitoba Bisons – who have three games in hand – for fifth in the conference.
The result is also significant for Mount Royal who now fall into a tie with the Saskatchewan Huskies for third place.
If the playoffs were to begin Saturday, the Dinos and Cougars would now match up in a Canada West Quarter-final series.
Mount Royal opened the scoring on home ice Friday night as Athena Hauck recorded her seventh goal of the season late in the second period. The Dinos responded right away as
Rebecca Clarke potted her third of the campaign 44 seconds later.
After a tightly contested five periods played between the Dinos and Cougars this week, the third period on Friday opened up and provided four goals – the first three off Calgary sticks.
Jess Martens got it started with her fourth of the year just over a minute into the final frame. Mid-way through the period,
Brooklin Fry and
Elizabeth Lang connected minutes apart to extend the lead to three.
Mount Royal got one back in the final second of the game as Ava Metzger scored at 19:59 of the third.
With 22 saves,
Amelia Awad recorded her first win of the season, while Kaitlyn Ross took the defeat with 29 stops.
The Dinos will have a week off before returning to action on Feb. 9-10 on the road against the Regina Cougars.
Mount Royal will travel to Saskatoon next weekend to face the Huskies, Feb. 2-3.
