Regina, Sask. – A wicked wrist shot by
Courtney Kollman with 56 seconds remaining sent the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team to a 3-2 win against the Regina Cougars at The Co-operators Centre.
The goal was Kollman's second of the third period and locked the Dinos into the fifth seed for the upcoming Canada West Playoffs. Now with a record of 12-13-2, Calgary will face either the Mount Royal Cougars or Saskatchewan Huskies in a conference quarter-final series next weekend.
Regina falls to 6-19-2 following the setback on Friday.
The Dinos got their offence started early as the big line of Kollman,
Elizabeth Lang, and
Sydney Mercier found the scoresheet less than five minutes into the game. Mercier broke into the offensive zone from the right side and slid a shot through the Regina netminder Natalie Williamson. Both Kollman and Lang collected assists on the play.
The game remained 1-0 through 40 minutes before a back-and-forth final frame.
While working a power play, Shaylee Scraba pounced on a rebound to tie the game six minutes into the third period.
Calgary replied five minutes later when Kollman finished off a two-on-one rush with a perfect pass from Lang.
The seesaw battle continued with six minutes left in the third when the Cougars were awarded a penalty shot. Regina captain Jenna Merk stepped up and deked out
Gabriella Durante to tie it.
The game appeared destined for overtime when a late Cougars penalty gave the Dinos one last opportunity – and they capitalized immediately.
Mercier set up Kollman with space in the left face-off circle where she released a clinical shot for the game winner.
Durante stopped 27 shots in the win, while Williamson made 20 saves.
The Dinos and Cougars will close out the regular season on Saturday at 4 p.m. MT.
