EDMONTON – The University of Calgary Dinos brought home a collection of hardware to close out the 2024 Canada West Curling Championships, with the third and final day of action Sunday from the Saville Centre.
Dinos rookie
Max Cinnamon was named a Canada West All-Star, while Laine Peters and Heather Rogers were named the Canada West Men's and Women's Coaches of the Year.
In just their first full season of competition and second since the program restarted last fall, the Dinos finished this year's conference tournament in third place on both sides. The men closed out the final day with a 9-4 loss to host Alberta, while the Calgary women gave this year's conference champion Pandas their toughest battle of the weekend with a 10-7 loss Sunday morning.
Following that result, Calgary, Victoria and Regina were all tied for second place on the women's side with 3-2 records, setting up a tie-breaker between the Dinos and Vikes. The Cougars were eliminated from the tie-breaker with the highest accumulative last stone draw distance.
In a rematch of arguably the best showdown of the tournament that saw Calgary down the Vikes on Saturday in extra ends, Victoria got revenge in the tie-breaking rematch. Leading 6-5 through nine with hammer, the Vikes made a hit-and-stick for a single, punching their ticket to Fredericton with a 7-5 win over the Dinos.
Both Alberta teams, the Victoria women and the Regina men all now head to the U SPORTS Championships, hosted this year by UNB in Fredericton, N.B.
