Rugby 7s season underway in Edmonton

EDMONTON – Protected from the elements, five teams from Canada West hit the field running for Day 1 of action on Saturday inside the Dome at Foote Field for the first of three Canada West Rugby 7s tournaments.

Following up their first Canada West 7s banner last season, the UBC Thunderbirds continued their winning ways going 2-0 on opening day, extending their win streak to 17 games following a perfect 15-0 record in 2023. Sarah Kuljuvee led all players with three trys and three converts to put 25 points on the board for the 'Birds.

Not to be outdone by their west coast rivals, the Victoria Vikes also put up two wins, defeating both the Alberta Pandas (29-0) and Lethbridge Pronghorns (31-5), allowing just a single try on the day, courtesy of Pronghorn Kenya Richards breakthrough 50-yard run.

Playing host for the weekend, the Pandas opened their tournament with a battle of Alberta, earning their single win of the day with a 31-12 win over the Dinos. Veteran Kate Manning put up three converts, while five different Pandas touched the ball down.

The Dinos bounced back later in the day with a 19-12 win over Lethbridge. The 'Horns took an early 5-0 lead, but back-to-back tries from Makayla Joseph put Calgary ahead and rookie Bomi Lawal finished off the win.

The Pronghorns will only have one opportunity to earn a victory when they take on the Pandas tomorrow afternoon, after, playing three games on Day 1, losing to the Thunderbirds (43-0), Vikes (31-5) and the Dinos (19-12) after an extra time chip kick resulted in a turnover and final whistle.

Following travel issues, the Trinity Western Spartans were unable to compete in Edmonton.

All teams will finish up group play tomorrow, with Vikes and Thunderbirds battling it out for the top spot in the final game of the weekend at 1:22 p.m. MST.
