EDMONTON – It was a busy and successful weekend for the University of Calgary Dinos wrestling teams, competing in a pair of meets this past weekend.
On Friday in a head-to-head showdown with the University of Alberta, the Dinos women won 25-19, while Alberta won the men's matchup 34-11.
Ankita Singh and
Angelina Ellis-Toddington both pinned their opponents, with Singh doing so in a tidy 42 seconds.
The trio of
Grace Lew,
Gabriela Cross and
Annika Fines all picked up tech fall wins over the Pandas, while
Maya Johnston won via decision.
On the men's side,
Brantley Saar and
Prosper Ademoye both started the weekend strong with wins over the Golden Bears.
Then, at Saturday's Golden Bear Invitational, the Dinos women topped the field of six teams, while the Calgary men finished the day third.
Ellis-Toddington pinned all three of her opponents to win the 65kg bracket, while Lew topped the 62kg field with a pair of 10-0 tech fall wins.
Ellise Daynes,
Eilidh Wist and Fines all finished runner-up in their respective weight classes, while Johnston and Cross brought home bronze medals.
Four Dinos finished second overall in the men's field.
Fred Calingay,
Shane Richards and Ademoye all claimed silver in their weight classes, as did
Brantley Saar, who pinned his first two opponents in a combined 2:38.
Wesley Smith and
Kaden Urrutia also had strong performances Saturday, finishing third in the 90kg and 57kg classes, respectively.
Calgary now has a week off before heading to Lethbridge for the final regular season action of the season Jan. 26-27.
