EDMONTON – One night after being on the receiving end of a 3-0 shutout in the season opener, the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team returned the favour with a 4-0 blanking of the MacEwan Griffins Saturday evening from Edmonton's Downtown Community Arena.
Calgary scored once in the first, once in the second and twice in the third to coast to its first win of the season and even its record at 1-1 on the year.
Amelia Awad got the nod in net for the Dinos, coming up big when called up and tying her career high with 22 saves en route to her first U SPORTS shutout.
The Dinos got the scoring started early as
Elizabeth Lang buried a perfect pass from
Courtney Kollman point blank just 6:41 into the game to make it 1-0.
Calgary maintained that one-goal lead until the 14:00 mark of the second period. The Dinos possessed deep in the Griffins zone and were cycling the puck when
Kyla Mitenko found
Jolie Nafziger, and the Caroline, Alta. product's backhanded shot was too much for goalkeeper Brianna Sank to make it 2-0.
Sydney Mercier got in on the action midway through the third period. The All-Canadian a season ago forced a turnover in the MacEwan zone, passed to teammate
Rebecca Clarke and got it right back before finishing for her first of the year.
Just over two minutes later, Nafziger struck again. Rookies
Caitlyn Perlinger and
Evelyn Lawrence worked to get the puck down low, when Lawrence found a wide-open Nafziger who calmly added her second of the day and the team's fourth to close out the scoring at the 11:37 mark of the third.
The Dinos finished with a 31-22 edge in shots on the day, including an 11-3 advantage in the final period.
Calgary stays on the road next weekend, heading off to Langley, B.C. for a Friday-Saturday series against Trinity Western.
