Rollercoaster finish sees Spartans slip past Dinos

LANGLEY, B.C. – Jordyn Matthews scored with 37 seconds left in the third period to give the Trinity Western Spartans a 3-2 win in a wild finish that saw four goals over the final 10:22 inside the Langley Events Centre.

The Spartans scored early in the second period and held a 1-0 lead until 9:38 into third, when the Dinos scored a pair of goals just over two minutes apart to grab a 2-1 lead, only to see TWU find the back of the net twice in the final minutes of the game to just sneak out the win.

Trinity Western moves to 1-0 after claiming their season opener, while the Dinos fall to 1-2 on the young season.

The Spartans came out strong and had 13 shots on frame in the opening period, but Calgary goaltender Gabriella Durante was up to the task, making a number of clutch saves to keep the game scoreless after one.

Chloe Reid finally got the scoring started in this one, perfectly finishing a great pass from Michela Naccarato to make it 1-0 just 6:55 into the second.

The score remained the same until midway through the third, when a low-scoring game for 50 minutes suddenly blew wide open.

Solana Cooper got things started for the Dinos. The rookie jumped on a turnover inside the Spartans' zone, made a move and fired a backhanded shot that went up and over the TWU goalie for the first U SPORTS goal of her young career to tie things up at 1-1 with 10:22 left to play.

Just over two minutes later, Calgary once again made quick work of a turnover. Rebecca Clarke corralled the puck at the attacking blue line and quickly had a 3-on-1. She played a perfect give-and-go with teammate Josie McLeod, one-timing the finish glove side to suddenly give her team a 2-1 lead.

TWU was able to battle back though, leveling things up with just 3:22 left in regulation on a goal by Brooklyn Anderson. Olivia Leier started the play down the right side and sent a puck into the crease. Durante kicked it away, only to have Anderson there for the backdoor rebound to tie things back up.

Looking destined for overtime, the Spartans were able to just find a way. Anderson carried the puck deep and sent the puck into the crease, where Jordyn Matthews was able to just get a sick on it and see it trickle into the back of the net for the lead and the eventual game winner.

Durante finished the night with 25 saves, while Kate Fawcett was credited with 30 saves in the win.

The two teams are right back at it Saturday at 2 p.m. MT from the Langley Events Centre.
