Lethbridge, Alta. – A pair of second-half goals helped the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team earn a point in a 3-3 tie versus the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sunday afternoon at Community Sports Stadium.
After having their Friday night match in Saskatoon postponed due to poor air quality, the Dinos were playing in only their second game of the season. Calgary managed to strike first, but it was the Pronghorns who controlled the scoreboard for most of Sunday, led by a brace from Alasdair Coyle.
The Dinos trailed by two goals with just over 30 minutes to play before goals from
Gianmarco Plenzik and
James Greco-Taylor.
Calgary now holds a 0-1-1 record, while Lethbridge sits at 1-2-1 in Canada West play.
The first goal of the season by Calgary was scored in the 8th minute on Sunday.
Kundai Dziwa drove the play up the right wing before feeding
Derek Brust in the box where the senior chipped the ball into the top left corner.
The lead would not last long though, as only minutes later Kai Sakaguchi's low shot beat
Liam Hunter.
Lethbridge went ahead 2-1 in the 27th minute on a hard shot by Coyle for his first of the day. Coyle's second goal came early in the second half as he worked past a series of defenders before tucking a shot past Hunter.
After being brought down in the box,
Gianmarco Plenzik capitalized at the penalty spot to bring the Dinos within a goal in the 58th minute.
The equalizer came with 10 minutes to go, as Greco-Taylor lined up for a corner kick. The ball curled towards the goal and sailed over the outreached glove of Lethbridge goalkeeper Armaan Thawer and into the back of the net.
Calgary finished the match outshooting Lethbridge 14-10. Hunter made three saves for the Dinos, while Thawer ended with four stops in the Pronghorns' net.
The Dinos will host a pair of games next weekend at Dinosaur Field, as the Alberta Golden Bears and MacEwan Griffins come to town, Sept. 9-10.
Lethbridge will face the Saskatchewan Huskies at home in their next matchup on Sept. 9.
