Dinos knocked off in Vancouver

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds took down the University of Calgary Dinos women's rugby team by a score of 96-0 in front of a home crowd packed with alumni on a sunny Sunday at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre.

The U SPORTS No. 3-ranked T-Birds tallied 15 tries in the victory, including two each from Mia Bullock, Tia Jordo, Sara Kaljuvee and Adia Pye, and three from Savannah Bauder, who also added a rare drop goal and eight successful converts.

The T-Birds wasted no time in getting on the board. In the third minute, UBC used a solid scrum push to get within 15 yards of the Calgary try zone. The 'Birds then pulled the ball out, rifled it back to Bauder who made an aggressive kick pass toward the far right corner of the field. The ball initially looked to be going out of bounds before Mia Bullock streaked in from the wing, scooped it up without breaking stride and quickly touched it down in the Dinos' end to open the scoring.

Four minutes later, Olivia Sarabura caught a pass, burst through a seam in the Calgary defence around midfield and went on an explosive 40-yard run. When a pair of Dinos defenders finally managed to slow her down, the third year centre coolly spun and off-loaded the ball to a trailing Sara Kaljuvee who stiff-armed a final Dino before touching it down for five.

UBC steadily poured it on from there, adding six more tries and Bauder's drop goal to take a 55-0 lead into the break.

The young Calgary squad showed plenty of fight in the second half of play, battling the 'Birds for every yard despite the score.

They managed to slow down UBC's offence some with several powerful tackles near their try zone.

Ultimately, the T-Birds still tacked on seven more second half tries to push the final score to 96-0.

The Dinos return home for 10 days off before hosting their rivals, the University of Alberta Pandas, for a match at McMahon Stadium on Oct. 5. UBC is back in action in just four days, continuing a long homestand by hosting the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Thursday, Sept. 28.
