Vikes prove too much for Calgary

VICTORIA – Two goals early in the first half and another in the second gave the Victoria Vikes men's soccer team a 3-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday night from Centennial Stadium.

The Dinos – coming off a strong, hard-fought performance the night before against undefeated UBC – ran out of gas in this one and now fall to 1-5-2 on the year. Victoria now sits at 5-1-2 with the win.

Calgary came close to starting the scoring in this one, as Edomias Nesibu nearly netted his first collegiate goal on a blast from outside the box in the 14th minute, but – after a slight bobble – UVic keeper Callum Weir was able to corral the ball to secure the save and keep the game scoreless.

That wouldn't last for long though, as the Vikes got on the board in the 22nd minute on a beautiful header inside the box by Kaelan Cooke.

Victoria doubled their lead less than six minutes later. Javier Sagaste sent a low cross in front of the face of goal. Yassin Guitouni hammered a shot the Calgary keeper Liam Hunter made a nice save on, but the rebound went right to Aiden Grew, who took a beat and calmly placed the ball into the net for the 2-0 lead in the 28th minute.

The score would remain the same until early in the second when the Vikes struck again. Sagaste once again was the engine of the attack, sending another low cross through the box, where Grew was left unmarked on the back post for the tap-in goal in the 54th minute.

Hunter made a pair of saves down the stretch to keep the score the same. In the 67th minute, he kept a floater from distance from just crossing the line before a great save on a shot from point blank in the 84th.

Calgary made its best run of the night in the 85th minute. Aidan Izadi picked up the ball down the right sideline and sent a low cross into the box. Dominic Anamali collected the ball, took a touch and looked to have the keeper beaten, but the shot was blocked by a defender and the chance thwarted away.

James Welsh forced a great save from Weir in the 90th minute, when the rookie blasted one from just outside the box the forced Weir to dive backward and punch the ball over the bar to keep the Dinos off the scoreboard.

In all, Weir was credited with four saves on the night, while Hunter tallied five for the Dinos.

The Dinos return home next weekend for a pair of games at Dinosaur Field, starting Saturday at noon when Lethbridge comes to campus.
