CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team erupted for a season-high four goals in a 4-0 win versus the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday afternoon at Dinosaur Field.
On a rainy day that started with a dance and blessing of the field by members of Siksika Nation as part of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Dinos put forward their best performance of the season. Calgary outshot Lethbridge 27-11 with 11 attempts on target and found the back of the net three times in the second half.
"The way we started with multiple chances, it felt like the same old story where we couldn't put it in the net. In fairness, we asked them before the game to get bodies toward the net and we needed goals. They did great today," said Dinos head coach
Brendan O'Connell. "We have lost some senior players and we're playing with a load of rookies that are playing with passion and good habits. Today we asked them to be strong mentally and they did that."
The win provides Calgary with a crucial three points as they look to recover from a slow start to the season. The Dinos now hold a 2-5-2 record, while the Pronghorns drop to 3-3-4.
The Dinos broke through on the scoreboard following some miscommunication between the Lethbridge goalkeeper and his defenders.
Dominic Anamali took advantage of a casual breakout and with an interception took control and scored his first goal of the season in the 27th minute.
The game remained tied into the final 30 minutes of play when Calgary tallied three times.
James Greco-Taylor doubled the lead as he took a cross from
Josral Frederick and beat the goalkeeper Armaan Thawer.
Next, it was
Gianmarco Plenzik, who placed a shot low from outside the box into the left side of the net where Thawer could not reach it.
Greco-Taylor added his second goal of the afternoon in the 81st minute.
Liam Hunter made two saves in 90 minutes to earn his first clean sheet of the season.
The Dinos will host their seniors' day celebration on Sunday afternoon in their final home game of the season against the Saskatchewan Huskies. The game gets underway at 12 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at

The Pronghorns remain in Calgary and face the Mount Royal Cougars on Sunday at 3 p.m.
