VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's rugby team shutout the University of Calgary by a score of 65-0 Thursday evening at Wallace Field to claim the program's fourth-straight Jenny Vincent Memorial Game victory.
Vincent, a pioneer in women's rugby, coached both the Vikes and Dinos during her career, leading UVic during its first season of then-CIS play and turning Calgary's club team into a varsity program.
The Vikes were led by two-try performances from Avery Champion and Justine Blatt-Janmaat, while Maggie MacKinnon scored 13 points for UVic with a try and four converts.
Victoria improves to 2-1 on the season with the victory, while the Dinos fall to 0-4 with the loss.
UVic opened the scoring with two tries and two successful conversions in the first 10 minutes of play, taking a 14-0 lead over Calgary.
The Dinos saw their first signs of offence in the 15th minute, when
Daisy Shackley carried the ball over the halfway line to get Calgary into their scoring half for the first time during the match. However, a penalty against the Dinos halted their progress and returned the ball to Victoria.
After three more Vikes tries in the 19th, 24th, and 36th minutes for a 29-0 lead, Victoria was called for a penalty in the 40th minute near the halfway line that gave the Dinos their best scoring look of the half.
After a quick restart, a run from
Victoria Okeke put Calgary inside the 22-metre line before being stopped. Unable to gain any more ground on the next attempt, the halftime whistle was blown with the Vikes ahead, 29-0.
UVic added four tries and two converts for a 53-0 lead over the first 20 minutes of the second half before the Dinos were able to return to their scoring half.
In the 60th minute, a turnover by the Vikes landed in the hands of
Makayla Joseph, who moved the Dinos over the halfway line. After being stopped, a quick pass out found
Esita Qiodravu in open space. Able to push forward, she was stopped just before the 22. Calgary remained in the scoring half for over three minutes, their longest stretch of the match, but were unable to gain any points before turning the ball over to UVic.
Two more Vikes tries and one successful convert sealed the final score at 65-0 for Victoria.
The Dinos return to action Sunday, Sept. 24 at UBC. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. MT.
