CALGARY –
Rachel Barlow took charge for the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday, scoring all three goals for her first career hat trick in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Trinity Western University on Saturday afternoon at Dinosaur Field. The tie today brings the Dinos to 4-1-1 on the year, while the Spartans move to to 2-1-3.
Dinos keeper
Katie French made three saves, including a spectacular save off a penalty shot in the 37th minute of the game.
Rachel Barlow scored her third, fourth, and fifth goals of the season in this one, netting the first hat trick for the Dinos since Montana Leonard did it twice during her historic 2021 campaign.
Trinity Western's Charity Field scored the first goal of the game in the 12th minute, with Barlow following in quick succession to tie up the game in the 20th minute on a nice give-and-go with
Ella Djuranic. This momentum propelled the Dinos throughout the first half, with Barlow scoring again in the 29th minute to bring the score to 2-1 and French making the save off a penalty and turning away the rebound in the 37th minute. Trinity Western bounced back before the half was over, with Field back again to tie up the score at 2-2 at intermission.
Coming back after halftime, both the Spartans and Dinos battled for dominance, with the Spartans Tilly James scoring the team's third goal of the game in the 58th minute, giving TWU a 3-2 lead. Barlow came back again for the Dinos, forcing a turnover deep in Spartan territory and beating the keeper one-on-one to score her third goal of the game in the 64th minute, bringing the score back to a tie at 3-3.
The Dinos nearly walked away with a win on the final play of stoppage time.
Isabella DiPalma's shot from outside the 18 went just wide, leaving this one in a 3-3 tie.
Both teams finished 14 shots - nine on goal by the Dinos and six on frame for the Spartans.
Barlow finished the game off on a personal high, and while she was excited about the goals she scored, she was ready for the team to have a chance to play again tomorrow in hopes of a definitive victory.
"I think we will use this tie as motivation for tomorrow, and to try and get three points this weekend," Barlow noted after the game.
The Dinos are right back at it Sunday at noon on Dinosaur Field, where they will face off against Fraser Valley. Meanwhile, TWU heads to Lethbridge for a Sunday matinee with the Pronghorns.
