Dinos settle for draw with Spartans

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos finished with a 1-1 draw against the Trinity Western Spartans Saturday afternoon from Dinosaur Field.

It was a brilliant game by both teams, with the Dinos now moving to 0-3-2 on the year, while the Spartans remain undefeated at 3-0-4.

Although Trinity Western applied pressure early on in the contest, the Dinos showed their assertive game play as they hit four shots in the first 15 minutes compared to just one by the Spartans.

The game's first goal came in the 23rd minute, when Aidan Izadi scored his first goal of the season with a brilliant cross-kick, putting the Dinos in the lead.

Both Trinity Western and Dinos built pressure on each other, as their defences were too good for each other for a second goal in the first half.

The game got interesting in the second half as both the teams had their fair share of chances, but it was Trinity Western that was able to capitalize. TWU kept up the pressure and finally broke through in the 78th minute as second-half sub Xander Roxburgh scored, with the assist going to Vito De Cotiis.

Both teams continued to scratch and claw for to put their team ahead, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Yeshua Silwamba finished with a game-high eight saves in the draw for the Spartans, while Liam Hunter was called on for a pair of saves for Calgary.

The Dinos will look to get their first win of the season under their belt Sunday as they take on UNBC from Dinosaur field. Meanwhile, Trinity Western is now off until next weekend when they start a homestand against Saskatchewan Sept. 22.
