CALGARY –
Kundai Dziwa and
William Omoreniye both scored their first goals of the season in a 2-1 win for the University of Calgary Dinos Sunday, knocking off UNBC from Dinosaur Field.
Michael Henman scored late for the Timberwolves to make a game of it, but the Dinos closed out their first win of the year in a highly entertaining showing at home.
With the win, the Dinos get off the schneid and move to 1-3-2, while UNBC moves to 1-5-1 on the year.
"It's done the confidence a world of good," Calgary head coach
Brendan O'Connell said after the game. "It wasn't our best game, to be honest. There were some tired legs, but we got the three points and that's what we wanted to do.
"This game could have gone either way. They (UNBC) had some unbelievable chances beforehand. We rode our luck a little bit in the first half and I think we settled down a little bit once we got the goal. We always make life hard for ourselves in the backend with them scoring, but overall, we're pleased."
In a game that quickly started back and forth - with strong scoring chances from both sides right out of the gate - it was the Dinos that struck first.
William Omoreniye sent a deep cross-field pass into the far corner, where
Kundai Dziwa settled on it. The third year took a number of touches to get around his defender and fired, burying the ball in the back of the net for his first goal of the year in the 11th minute.
The score remained the same until midway through the second half.
Edomias Nesibu sent a ball from the wing to the top of the 18, where Omoreniye took a touch and made no mistake to make it 2-0 in the 68th minute.
UNBC got on the board late, taking advantage of a turnover at midfield and instantly springing on the attack. Michael Henman took a touch to spin the defender around, turned on the jets to get behind the backline and his low, left-footed blast found the net near post for his fourth of the year, making it 2-1 in the 82nd minute.
The Dinos held off any further chances, however, to see this on out and claim the win.
Calgary finished with the edge in both shots (16-6) and shots on goal (6-2) Sunday.
Daniel Zadravec made four saves in net for UNBC, while
Liam Hunter recorded one save to earn his first win of the season and second of his career.
Up next, Calgary heads to the Pacific coast, starting with a Friday night contest at UBC, while the Timberwolves return home for a weekend homestand, starting Friday against Alberta.
