Dinos go perfect on opening weekend

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team completed a perfect opening weekend, defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Dinosaur Field.

Ella Djuranic rounded out the scoring in the match, finishing the season's opening two games with three goals. Rachel Barlow converted on a penalty kick for her second of the season, while Isabella DiPalma recorded her first goal of the year.

"We are pretty proud of this weekend; it was our home opener, and we were all pretty pumped for that," said Barlow. "I think today we came out strong and picked it up in the second half and we made a good statement for our first weekend."

DiPalma got the scoring started early for Calgary on Sunday in the 5th minute. Erica Mysko cut up the left side before firing the ball into the box where DiPalma danced around a defender and chipped it past the Winnipeg goalkeeper Madison Priebe.

The Wesmen managed to hold off the Dinos attack for the remainder of the first half despite 13 shot attempts by the home team. Priebe finished the match with 15 saves, including six in the first 45 minutes.

A handball in the box would send Barlow to the penalty spot in the 48th minute. The Dinos team captain buried the ball in the lower left corner to make it 2-0.

Djuranic pushed the score to 3-0 in the 76th minute as she quickly pounced on a scoring chance and knocked home a bouncing ball from in close.

Katie French made her second consecutive start in the Calgary net and finished a second clean sheet with one save on Sunday.

"Our goals this season are to continue building relationships that we made last year as we were pretty new then, and now we've had a whole year under our belt, we want to continue working on our strengths together," stated Barlow.

"I want to continue being a role model for everyone, now that I am a senior and have five years under my belt, I want to really be an example for the younger girls."

With a 2-0 record, the Dinos will travel to face the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday, Sept. 2. The Wesmen will look for their first points of the year next weekend when they host the MacEwan Griffins and Alberta Pandas.
