LETHBRIDGE –
Grace Moore scored once and assisted on another to help lead the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team to a convincing 3-1 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday afternoon from Lethbridge Community Stadium.
The win is the third in a row to start the season for Calgary, now outscoring their opponents 10-1 for a red-hot start to the 2023 campaign. Meanwhile, the Pronghorns fall to 1-2.
Three different players found the back of the net in this one as the Dinos now have six goal scorers on the young season.
Once again, Calgary started the scoring in the early going.
Rachel Barlow forced a turnover deep in Horns territory and pushed the ball out wide down the right flank. Her cross to the middle of the box found
Grace Moore, who took a nifty touch to send two defenders flying past, creating a wide-open shooting lane and the third year forward did not miss for her second goal of the year just 9:34 into the game.
Moore nearly made it 2-0 just two minutes later as she got behind the defence after a great through ball, took a touch to beat the keeper but a sliding save from a Horns defender kept the score at 1-0.
The Dinos continued to carry the majority of possession, but it was Lethbridge that found the next goal. Hailey Slobodian had a slew of defenders in front of her, but her shot from just outside the top of the box just slide inside the far post to level things up in the 28th minute.
Calgary responded in a big way less than three minutes later. Moore collected the ball on the edge of the box, turned past her defender and fired. Her shot went off the crossbar and caromed back toward the field of play where
Sofia DiGiacomo was there to put it home for her first of the year to put the Scarlet & Gold back ahead, 2-1 in the 31st.
The Dinos continued to apply pressure in the second half, with that pressure paying off in the 61st minute off a connection by a pair of subs.
Erica Mysko drove the ball toward the corner flag before pulling back and finding
Kaleigh Major. The rookie took one touch before ripping a shot from 22-yards out that flew right over the keeper's head and into the back of the far netting to stretch the lead to 3-1.
Calgary would continue to press but the score remained the same the rest of the way. The Dinos finished this one with an 18-8 edge in shots.
Katie French was called on to make a season-high five saves, while Lethbridge goalkeeper Bridie Harding made six saves for the Pronghorns.
Up next is a trip north for the Dinos, heading to Edmonton next weekend to take on Alberta on Saturday before a Sunday contest at MacEwan. Both games are scheduled for noon kickoffs.
