The University of Calgary Dinos baseball team faced off against the 4th seeded Thompson Rivers University on Friday May 19 in the first round of the 2023 CCBC World Series. The Dinos came into the game looking for their first victory in the first round at the CCBC championships.
The 5th seeded Dinos succeeded in getting the victory as they defeated the Wolfpack by a score of 14 - 9, in a high octane offensive display by both teams to advance on the championship side of the draw. The two teams combined for 29 hits with the Dinos securing 17 total hits over the 9 innings.
Dinos did most of their damage in the top of the 6th inning when they exploded for 9 runs to erase what had been a 4 - 1 deficit through five. Dinos were led offensively by a number of players, including:
Bauer Sewell - 2nd year shortstop 3 for 4 at the plate, 2 runs scored and 1 RBI
Cale Yuzdepski - 4th year designated hitter 4 for 6 at the plate, 1 run scored and 1 RBI
Colin Baxter - 2nd year left field 3 for 5 at the plate, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI
Max Skinner - 2nd year third base 2 for 4 at the plate, one walk, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI
Kalli Einarson - 5th year right field 2 for 4 at the plate, one walk, 1 run scored and 1 RBI
Starting pitcher
Ethan Webster (2nd year) went 5 innings giving up 4 earned runs on 6 hits and 1 walk, but was not involved in the final decision as relief pitcher
Liam McAusland picked up the win for the Dinos.
The Dinos will now face the #1 seed and championship host the PBA Dawgs on Saturday at 1pm, Spitz Field. The Dinos and Dawgs split their regular season competiton 3-3 with the Dinos taking 3 of 4 at home and the Dawgs winning a double header in Lethbridge during the last week of the regular season.
