REGINA – The University of Regina men's basketball team got out to a hot start and never looked back in a 73-57 win over the University of Calgary Dinos Friday night from the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport.
The Cougars jumped out to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter and never trailed, securing a big win to move to 8-9 on the year – pulling even with Calgary in the Canada West standings with just three games left in the regular season.
Carter Millar led the way for Regina with 21 points and 12 rebounds with also collecting a team-high five assists. Matt Bernard also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Major Madol added 14 and nine.
For the Dinos,
Mason Foreman was one of three players in double figures on the night with a team-high 13 points to go with eight boards.
Noah Wharton scored 12, while
Alan Spoonhunter went 4-8 from the floor to finish with 11 points.
Calgary made a run in the third, rattling off nine in a row to chip away, but never got any closer down the stretch.
The two teams will square off again Saturday night. Tip time is officially scheduled for 7 p.m. MT, though there are Senior Night festivities for the Cougars prior to both the women's and men's games.
