REGINA – The University of Calgary Dinos men's basketball team erased a 21-point deficit, coming all the way back for a 94-90 overtime win over the University of Regina Saturday night from the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars came out of the gates on fire, connecting on five three-pointers in the first quarter and nine in the first half in building a 55-38 lead at the break.
But the Dinos regrouped and owned the third quarter. A 17-5 run shortly into the second half capped by a triple from
Parker Johnstone suddenly cut the gap to just 64-58. The Cougars were able to regroup but Calgary kept things within reach, trailing 73-64 after three.
Mason Foreman drilled a three-pointer to start the fourth and the Dinos showed they were up for the fight. Still down by seven with five minutes to play, Calgary clamped down defensively and got timely buckets from Foreman and
Noah Wharton, the former of which's layup with 1:02 left in the fourth gave Calgary an 81-80 advantage – their first lead since going up 4-2 early.
Regina found their way to the free-throw line to tie the game and send this one to overtime.
In the extra period,
Jeffrey Tezo hit a big triple with a minute and a half to go to put Calgary up seven. Tezo also hit a pair of free throws with just seconds remaining, which made it a two-possession game and sealed the win for the Dinos.
Fittingly on Senior Night, Regina's top two players were Carter Millar and Brayden Kuski. Millar finished with 27 points and nine rebounds, while Kuski poured in 21 points and led all players with seven assists.
Five players finished scoring in double figures for the Dinos, led by Foreman and
Ezeoha Santiago with 19 apiece. Foreman also hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Wharton and Tezo both added 15 points each, while
Spencer Roberts scored 14 on 6-8 shooting.
Calgary's win moves them to 9-9 and clinches a playoff berth for the Dinos. The Cougars haven't technically clinched, but will almost certainly head to the postseason as a No. 8, No. 9, or No. 10 seed.
The Cougars (8-10) will close out their conference schedule with two games against MacEwan in Edmonton, while the Dinos return to the Jack Simpson Gym for their senior weekend next Friday and Saturday against rivals Mount Royal.
