CALGARY – The No. 10 University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team is off to the Canada West Final Four, heading to Regina for a semifinal matchup against the fourth-ranked Cougars Friday at 6 p.m. MT. from the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Friday's game will be streamed live on Canada West TV.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. HOLDING SERVE – Thus far, the Canada West postseason has gone entirely as forecasted. The play-in contests saw all four higher seeds advance only to see the top-four host schools flip the script on those day-one winners this past Saturday. Calgary and Regina faced the stiffest quarter-final tests, as Trinity Western held a third-quarter lead inside the CKHS before the Cougars mounted their comeback, while Winnipeg forced a 71-all tie with 3:27 left in the fourth in Calgary before the Dinos rattled off 11 in a row en route to the win.
2. CLASH OF THE TITANS – Calgary and Regina have been two of the perennial top programs in Canada West for many years now, so it's no surprise the two squads battled in a pair of instant classics earlier this season. Kicking off the month of February, the Dinos handed then-No. 1 ranked Regina its first home loss of the season in an 86-80 overtime thriller. The Cougars responded one day later by scoring the final nine points of the game for a 56-53 comeback win to earn the home split.
3. PLAYOFF REMATCH – The Dinos will be looking to exorcise some playoff demons on Friday, as the Cougars have knocked Calgary from the postseason three times over the last six seasons and hold an 11-2 edge in the head-to-head series in postseason play. Calgary's last playoff win over this weekend's opponent came back in 2012 at the national championships when the Scarlet & Gold stunned the No. 1 seed, 75-66 in Calgary.
4. CLICKING AT THE RIGHT TIME – Due to several injuries throughout the regular season, Dinos head coach
Damian Jennings once again leaned heavily on his team's depth. While Calgary still is a very well-rounded team, they're also getting healthier at the right time. Since the turn of the calendar to February, coach Jennings has finally had his full lineup at his disposal and the Dinos have responded in a big way – outscoring their opponents 380-327 over those five games.
5. HISTORY CLASS – This season marks the fourth time in the last five that the Dinos have advanced to the Canada West Final Four. The Dinos will be looking for their ninth conference title in program history and first since 2001.
