CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos faced off against the MacEwan Griffins Saturday evening for the last regular season game of the year, with the Dinos taking home their 23rd win in a row by a score of 6-3.
The win caps Calgary's incredible regular season with a program record in both wins (25) and points (50), heading into the postseason with a 25-3 overall record and the top seed in this year's conference tournament.
Meanwhile, it's heartbreak for MacEwan as the Griffins finish the regular season at 9-18-1 for 19 points and a tie for the sixth and final playoff spot with Regina, but the Cougars claimed the tiebreaker and the final spot in this year's Canada West postseason.
"Our spot has earned us an extra chance to work on things and get some rest," Dinos head coach
Mark Howell said. "We've worked hard and we get to play at home. Four months. 23 wins in a row. It's hard to fathom. We went day-by-day and our guys bought in and earned it.
"We're good when we play with pace, we play fast, check hard, we don't give the opposition a lot of room to skate. We play a hard aggressive game. That's when we're at our best, so we'll do more or the same going into the playoffs."
The Dinos started this game off right with
Arjun Atwal snagging his eighth goal of the season just 6:52 into the game.
Josh Maser followed in his footsteps less than 90 seconds later, which brought the Dinos to 2-0. Griffins captain Kole Gable found the back of the net on a power play to suddenly make it a one-goal game with less than a minute before the first intermission. But the Dinos immediately responded as
Marty Westhaver ended off the opening period with his ninth goal of the year to push Calgary back ahead by two at the break.
The second period showed no slow down for either team, with another three goals added to the score sheet.
Colson Gengenbach scored his eighth goal of the season less than four minutes in, followed by Atwal, once again, to make it 5-1 at the 5:33 mark of the second. Marc Pasemko got the Griffins back on the board late in the frame, scoring his eighth goal of the season.
Noah King added his third goal in the last 24 hours halfway through the third period to stretch the lead to 6-2. The Griffins continued to fight and successfully made the score 6-3 during a power play as Jordan Taupert potted his fifth of the year to close out the scoring.
Carl Stankowski earned the win Saturday, making 16 saves along the way, while Thomas Davis racked up 32 saves in net for the Griffins.
