Cougars sneak past Dinos in third

CALGARY – Julianne Girardin's first Canada West goal was the difference on Saturday afternoon as the Regina Cougars edged the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team 3-2 at Father David Bauer Arena.

The Dinos led twice by one goal but were unable to hold on, falling to 2-7-1 on the season. Regina now moves ahead of Calgary in the standings at 3-6-1 following back-to-back road wins this weekend.

For the second game in a row, Sydney Mercier opened the scoring for the Dinos. The second-year forward drove to the net where she managed to deflect in a Courtney Kollman shot at 12:02 of the first period.

The game remained 1-0 until mid-way through the second period when the Cougars capitalized on the power play. Olivia Leggett loaded up from the right side of the zone and had her attempt redirected short side by Paige Hubbard.

The Dinos and Cougars traded goals just over a minute apart in the later stages of the middle frame. First, it was Kollman who weaved past a defender and buried the puck past Regina goaltender Arden Kliewer. Moments later though Shaylee Scraba eluded Dinos netminder Gabriella Durante with a nifty backhand.

Girardin's game-winning tally came in the middle of the third period. A shot from the right side by Paige Hubbard created a rebound in the crease and Girardin got just enough of the puck to poke it past a diving Durante.

Kliewer was unbeatable the rest of the way as she recorded her third consecutive win with a 27-save performance.

Durante finished the contest with 16 stops.

Calgary remains at home next weekend and will host the Saskatchewan Huskies for a pair of games, Nov. 10-11.

The Cougars travel to Winnipeg and face the Manitoba Bisons from Nov. 9-10.
