CALGARY – A third-period goal by
Elizabeth Lang helped the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team secure a 3-2 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday evening at Father David Bauer Arena.
The result snaps a six-game skid for Calgary and brings their record to 3-7-1, while Saskatchewan falls to 7-3-1 in Canada West play this season.
"The team worked hard, and they were driven, detailed and very focused. I'm very happy with how they played tonight," said Dinos interim head coach
Josh Gosling. "We want to do the same tomorrow and try and find that next level. They've been practicing well all week and they're building and hopefully, we can find that next gear."
Kate Ball put the Huskies on the board early in the game in the final seconds of a power play. Sara Kendall dished the puck to the right side where Ball quickly released a shot that beat goaltender
Gabriella Durante low to the glove side.
Special teams continued to play a factor in the first period as the Dinos tied the game while shorthanded. Right off the face-off to begin their penalty kill,
Brooklin Fry sprung
Josie McLeod on a breakaway. The third-year forward snuck a shot under the arm of Huskies netminder Camryn Drever to make it 1-1.
Calgary took their first lead of the night seven minutes into the second period. Nearing the bottom of the right face-off circle,
Rebecca Clarke wristed a shot from an unusual angle that fooled Drever and went through her into the back of the net.
Saskatchewan was outshot through the first two periods but brought significant pressure in the final frame, outshooting the home side 15-9.
The Dinos and Huskies traded goals in the final stages of the third. Lang put Calgary ahead by two with a well-placed shot for a power play marker. Kara Kondrat followed just under three minutes later as she capitalized on a scramble in the crease.
The Huskies pulled Drever with under two minutes to play and went up six-on-four following a Calgary penalty but were unable to find the equalizer.
The Dinos and Huskies will rematch on Saturday at Father David Bauer Arena with a 6 p.m. puck drop.
