Patterson nets winner in return to ice

Regina, Sask. – The University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team returned off a bye week and recorded a 4-1 road win over the Regina Cougars at The Co-operators Centre.

With the victory, the Dinos improve to 6-2-1 on the season, while the Cougars slip to 2-5-2.

The two teams traded early goals on Friday night. Marty Westhaver's first of the season for the Dinos came just 95 seconds into the contest, but Carson Sass tied it up for the Cougars less than six minutes later.

Returning to the lineup after missing five games, Max Patterson scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal with just two minutes left in the second period as he deflected home a Zach Wytinck point shot on the power play.

The Dinos pulled away in the opening minutes of the final frame. Colson Gengenbach scored an insurance goal just 55 seconds into the period and three minutes later Adam Kydd extended the lead to three for the visitors.

Carl Stankowski made 20 saves in the Calgary net, while his counterpart Curtis Meger got the start for Regina and stopped 28 attempts.

The Dinos and Cougars will match up again on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre. Puck drop is set for 5 p.m. MT.
