Early lead doesn’t hold as Dinos fall to Huskies

SASKATOON – In the second night of a battle between two of the top women's basketball programs in the country, No. 2 Saskatchewan was able to walk away with a 72-65 win over the No. 4 Calgary Dinos Saturday evening from the Physical Activity Complex.

Calgary came out flying and took an early lead, forcing Saskatchewan to take a timeout at the five-minute mark to regroup. The Huskies would begin to switch gears in the second half of the first, but the Dinos held onto their lead ending the first quarter 24-23.

Saskatchewan stole Calgary's lead early in the second, but the Dinos would pursue, taking the lead back by the end of the half, heading into halftime with the 35-33 lead.

The two teams continued to battle, keeping the point difference within three and taking turns with the lead for the first half of the third quarter. The Huskies pulled ahead with Gage Grassick closing the quarter with a buzzer-beating three pointer and the 57-45 lead.

The fourth quarter was neck and neck, with neither team letting up. The story of the fourth quarter was the Dinos foul trouble, as Louise Rouse and Kourtney Oss fouled out of the game in the final minutes.

Saskatchewan's Gage Grassick played the full 40 minutes and led the scoring race with 23 points. She also contributed six rebounds and three steals for the Huskies.

Kourtney Oss would lead the scoring for the Dinos, putting up 13 points and nine rebounds.

Calgary's Louise Rouse led in rebounds, getting her hands on 13 rebounds (eight offensive, five defensive).

The Huskies capitalized on turnovers, scoring 21 points from turnovers with the Dinos scoring 14.

With the win, Saskatchewan stays perfect at 8-0 on the year, while the Dinos fall to 6-2.

After two weeks in the Prairies, the Dinos finally return home – closing out the first semester with a Battle for Alberta showdown with the Golden Bears Friday and Saturday inside the Jack Simpson Gym.
