CALGARY –
Myriam Kone and
Louise Rouse both recorded double-doubles to lead the University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team to a 72-65 win over the University of Alberta Pandas Friday night from the Jack Simpson Gym.
In the first of this weekend's rematches of last year's Canada West Championship, the Dinos took the lead early and never looked back, holding off a strong rally down the stretch by the Pandas.
With the win, No. 5 Calgary improves to 7-2 on the year, while No. 3 Alberta dips to 4-3.
The Pandas were led by Kiah Easton-Ihediohanma, who finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jenna Harpe had a team-high 19 points for Alberta, while Reece Hall was a perfect 4-4 from the floor and finished with 10 points.
Rouse led all players with 24 points and 14 rebounds to tie her career high. Kone finished the night with 10 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, five steals and a block.
Mya Proctor added 14 points,
Pollyanna Storie another 11 and Amélie Collin stuffed the stat sheet with four points, 10 boards, eight assists and four steals.
The Dinos jumped out to an early lead right out of the gates, but Alberta kept things close after one, trailing just 19-17.
A triple by Eston-Ihediohanma and a four-point play by Harpe on the next possession for Alberta late in the second tied the game up at 29-29. But a pair of three pointers from Storie closed out the first half with the Dinos leading, 35-31.
Calgary's combination of strong shooting and lockdown defence helped spark a big run in the third.
Lilia Skumatova hit a three to make it 42-33 before a triple by Proctor extended the lead to 15 at 53-38 before finishing the frame with a 58-44 edge.
The Dinos held a 65-50 edge with just over four minutes to play when the shots finally started falling for the Pandas. Morgan Harris started the run with a bucket before a triple by Ella Rees and a layup by Claire Signatovich suddenly made this an eight-point game with 2:26 still on the clock. Back-to-back threes by Rees and Harpe cut the deficit to just 70-65 with 17 seconds left, but time ran out on the reigning conference champ's comeback effort as Rouse iced things away at the free throw line.
Both teams shot an identical 34.7 percent (26-75) from the floor overall, but the Dinos had a 13-7 edge from the charity stripe and a decisive 58-38 margin in the rebounding column.
The two teams close out the first half of the season with a rematch Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., again from the Jack Simpson Gym.
