Third period sinks banged-up Dinos

CALGARY – The UBC Thunderbirds snapped a three-game losing streak with a trio of third-period goals to defeat a shorthanded University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Father David Bauer Arena.

Chris Douglas was the first star of the weekend with three goals in the two-game set. His third of the weekend broke a 1-1 tie early in the final frame and propelled UBC to a split in Calgary.

The Thunderbirds jump into sole possession of second place in Canada West at 12-4-0. The Dinos, who played a player short on Saturday, now hold just a point lead ahead of UBC and sit at 12-3-1 at the top of the conference standings.

UBC came out fast in the opening period and put pressure on the Calgary net with 15 saves – forcing Dinos goaltender Carl Tetachuk to come up with a couple of highlight-reel stops.

The T-Birds opened the scoring with only 20 seconds remaining in the first as Douglas was the beneficiary of a Calgary turnover and found himself in open ice with time to wire a shot through Tetachuk.

Calgary took advantage of the intermission to regroup and answered back 69 seconds into the second period. Dakota Krebs connected with a pass from the defensive zone to Jaeger White who rushed up the middle and beat the glove of UBC's Cole Schwebius.

The game remained tied heading into the third period where UBC got three unanswered goals.

Douglas made it 2-1 as he converted off an odd-man rush for a power play marker. Liam Kindree also scored on a power play as he went through the legs of Tetachuk, while Cyle McNabb put the game out of reach with a wicked release in the final five minutes of the third.

Schwebius earned the win with 24 saves, while Tetachuk turned away 29 chances.

The Dinos close out the first half of the season on the road next weekend as they visit Langley, B.C., to battle the Trinity Western Spartans, Dec. 1-2.

UBC is back at home next weekend for a two-game set versus the Regina Cougars from Dec. 1-2.
