Comeback effort sends Dinos past Huskies

SASKATOON – The University of Calgary Dinos men's basketball team erased a 13-point deficit, claiming their first second-half lead on the final play of the third quarter and holding on from there for a 78-75 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night from the Physical Activity Complex.

The win improves the Dinos to 3-4 on the year, while Saskatchewan falls to 4-3.

Nate Petrone led a balanced attack for Calgary with 17 points. Alan Spoonhunter stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jaylen Lee, Dylan Lutes, Gurshan Sran and Javier Ramos-Yzquierdo all added eight points apiece in the win for the Dinos.

Kymahni Bent and Alexander Dewar each had 17 points to lead the way for the Huskies.

Saskatchewan took the lead off the jump, outscoring the Dinos in both the first (24-19) and second (17-12) quarters for a 41-31 edge at halftime.

Calgary switched gears after the break, turning the game around on the Huskies. A pair of free throws by Sran made it a one-point game before a layup by Jaylen Lee with four seconds left in the third gave the Dinos a 50-49 lead - their first of the second half. In all, Calgary outscored Saskatchewan 19-8 in the third quarter.

The Dinos continued their hot streak starting the fourth, making it a 10-0 run to take a 56-49 lead and held off a late charge from there for the key road win.

Calgary finished the night with a notable edge in points off turnovers, scored 24 points off Saskatchewan miscues compared to just 12 by the home team.

The two teams are right back at it Saturday at 6 p.m. MT.
