Rookies, Durante send Dinos to shootout win

LANGLEY, B.C. – Rookies Kyla Mitenko and Evelyn Lawrence each scored in the shootout and Gabriella Durante saved both Spartans attempts as the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team finished off a 4-3 comeback win over Trinity Western University Saturday afternoon from the Langley Events Centre.

The Dinos trailed 3-2 heading into the third period before Mitenko scored late to tie it and helping send her team home with a road split.

Calgary moves to 2-2 on the young season, while TWU moves to 1-1 after their first series of the year.

Calgary got on the board first Saturday off the stick of Courtney Kollman. Kyla Mitenko started the play with a quick centering pass that found a streaking Sydney Mercier. The second year took the puck in stride, got around her defender and created a 2-on-1. Mercier got the defender to commit and slotted the puck over to Kollman who was able to take a beat before firing for her first goal as a Dino just 4:15 into this one.

Trinity Western was able to tie things back up four minutes later off a great individual effort by Kate Klassen, with the third year back handing home her first of the season to make it 1-1 at the first intermission.

The Dinos once again got on the board early in the second. Emma Tait won a faceoff in the Spartans end and the puck ended up with Dana Wood right on the edge of the blue line. Wood fired a wrister on frame that found its way through traffic and into the net to make it 2-1 with 16:11 left in the second.

But TWU was able to level things up at the 8:55 mark as Kasey Ditner came out of the penalty box and had the puck fall right to her feet for the breakaway goal. Olivia Leier then gave the Spartans the lead late in the second with her first goal of the year.

The scored stayed that way until Kyla Mitenko scored her first career U SPORTS goal with five minutes remaining. With the Dinos on the penalty kill, Calgary took advantage of a mishandled puck at the blue line, where Mitenko immediately pounced. The rookie played a perfect give-and-go with Elizabeth Lang. Lang got the goalie to fully commit before slide the puck back to Mitenko for the tap in to tie things up at 3-3.

Neither team could break the tie in overtime, sending things to a shootout where the Dinos were perfect.

Mitenko started with a beautiful move through her legs to create a wide-open shot and she didn't miss to start the shootout with a goal. Durante then came up with a huge save on the ensuing Spartans attempt, fully stretching her left leg to the post to keep the puck out.

Evelyn Lawrence then stepped up and used some nifty stick work to keep the TWU goalkeeper completely guessing, calmly finishing with the backhand to make it 2-0 in the shootout.

Durante then called game as the fourth-year goalkeeper firmly shut the door the clinch the win for Calgary.
