CALGARY – The wrestling season is officially underway for the University of Calgary Dinos after hosting their annual dual meet versus the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday night inside the UCalgary Red Gym.
The Dinos women came away with a decisive 31-16 over the Huskies, while the Calgary men fell 29-17 to their Saskatchewan counterparts.
Calgary returns three U SPORTS medallists from a year ago on the women's side – and each had big days on their home mats.
Ellise Daynes (68kg) and
Eilidh Wist (72kg) both pinned their opponents, while
Gabriela Cross (56kg) picked up an 11-0 tech fall win.
Maya Johnston (53kg),
Danyka LaBelle (76 kg), and
Ankita Singh (50kg) were also triumphant for Calgary in their bouts.
On the men's side, it was the Dinos' heavyweights that found success.
Shane Richards (72kg) was able to make quick work of Max Meekins with a pin just over a minute into their match.
Jason Do (68kg), Nick Hooper (76kg), and
Brantley Saar (82kg) each won their bouts by tech fall.
Calgary will return to the mats on Nov. 24-25 as they travel to Saskatoon for the Huskies Duals and Open.
The Dinos host the 2024 Canada West Wrestling Championships on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Jack Simpson Gym.
