Dinos split with Griffins

CALGARY – Jaden Tomaszewski's second-half goal helped the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw versus the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday afternoon at Dinosaur Field.

With playoff positioning in the Canada West Prairie Division on the line, the result puts MacEwan in position to clinch first place on Sunday.

"It was a good battle between two of the top teams in the division but we are leaving a bit frustrated, we had a few good chances to seal it and find a way to win and that did not happen but I still believe our performance was really good and we are going to take that into tomorrow and the playoffs," said Dinos head coach Diogo Raposo. "Results are what matter when you get into playoffs and we need to be intelligent and keep up our compete level as one of our biggest pieces, it is the key factor for us.

"Performance does not matter when you get to playoffs, it is one and done so we will be motivated and most likely end up travelling but we will take it in stride and embrace it."

Brenna Paquin put the Griffins on the board three minutes into the match. The ball was sent down the left side of the field where it was met by Maya Morrell. She dished the ball across the box to Paquin on the right side where she stepped into the ball and put it behind the Dinos goalkeeper Anna Demarbre.

Calgary responded to tie the game in the 52nd minute. Tomaszewski stripped a Griffin of the ball and stepped into a shot from distance. The ball sailed over the heads of the defenders and dropped in over the outstretched hands of the MacEwan goalkeeper Sabrina Alexander and into the net.

In an even game on the scoresheet, the Dinos and Griffins each generated five shots on goals, with Demarbre and Alexander finishing with four saves apiece.

The Dinos sit in third place in the Prairie Division with a 7-2-4 record, while the Griffins remain in first place, now at 9-2-2.

The Dinos will take on the Alberta Pandas on Sunday, Oct. 15 at the Dinosaur Field for their final regular season game of the year and Seniors' Day at 12:00 p.m.

The Griffins will travel south to Lethbridge for an afternoon match-off against the Pronghorns at 12:00 p.m.
