Barlow shines in final home game

CALGARYRachel Barlow netted two goals to go with an assist for a memorable sendoff in her final game at Dinosaur Field as the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team used a strong second half for a 3-0 win over the Alberta Pandas Sunday afternoon in the regular season finale.

The Dinos finish the season with an 8-2-4 record in conference play, good for third place in the Canada West Prairie Division. They will receive a bye heading into the postseason and before heading to Trinity Western for a quarterfinal contest Friday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. MT.

Meanwhile, the Pandas close the regular season at 4-7-3 for fourth place in the Prairie Division. They will now host a play-in game against Regina, set for Saturday, Oct. 21 at noon from Foote Field.

With the win, Calgary closes out the regular season undefeated at home, posting a 5-0-4 record in front of their home fans.

"Being a Dino has meant everything to me," Barlow said after the win. "It has been such a big part of my life and has shaped me to be everything I am today. I've had such an amazing five years here and it's made me not just a better soccer player but a better person."

After a scoreless first half that favoured the Pandas, Calgary turned the tables and got on the board early in the second off a set piece. Barlow took a corner kick from the left side and whipped the ball straight at the face of the goal. Rookie Danica Pullishy put on the springs and squarely headed the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in the 52nd minute.

Just over 10 minutes later, the Dinos struck again, this time with Barlow on the finishing end. Erica Mysko caught up to the ball near the end line down the right side of the field and sent the ball across the 18-yard box, where Barlow was waiting and powered home her sixth goal of the year to make it 2-0 in the 63rd.

Barlow then added another off a penalty in the 72nd. Mysko collected the ball at midfield and turned on the jets, carrying the ball all the way inside the 18 where she was taken out to draw the penalty kick. Barlow calmly converted the PK to bring her point total on the season to 11.

Alberta continued to battle and looked to get on the board late in the contest on a header off a set piece, but the official's flag was up for offside.

Dinos goalie Anna Demarbre had a total of five saves on the afternoon for her third shutout of the year. Autumn Wynn was credited with three saves for the Pandas.

Calgary finished the game with a 17-15 edge in shots - claiming an 11-3 edge in the second half after Alberta had a 12-6 edge at halftime.

"I think we had a slow start to this game. We weren't happy about that, but we really picked it up in the second half and I'm very proud of us for that," Barlow said. "We need to work on our starts and really show teams who we are. Sometimes we don't play ourselves and we need to go into all of the playoffs playing the best we can."

After the game, the Dinos recognized their graduating seniors in Barlow and Alison Pedersen. The duo have helped the Dinos go 36-8-10 in conference play in their four seasons on the field in the Scarlet & Gold – winning one conference title and earning two trips to nationals.

Both teams will now turn their attention to postseason play.
