Second half starts against league leaders

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team (8-2) returns to action this weekend, hosting the Winnipeg Wesmen (7-1) for a pair of games inside the Jack Simpson Gym starting Friday.

Both Friday and Saturday's games are scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. and can be streamed live on Canada West TV.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

1. HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN
– This weekend's matchup will feature two of the early frontrunners in Canada West, thus far. The Dinos sit at 8-2 through the first half of the season – good for a tie for third place in the standings. Meanwhile, the Wesmen – the reigning national silver medallists – are tied for first with a 7-1 mark before the winter break.

2. RIVALRY RENEWED – It's been a little while since the Dinos and Wesmen battled on the hardwood, with the last contest coming in January 2020 in Winnipeg. The Dinos own an 18-11 edge in the series in conference action and have won the last five. The last win for the Wesmen came in a 72-51 contest in Calgary in the first leg of the 2015-16 season-opening series.

3. PUTTING UP THE POINTS – This weekend's series features two of the top offences in all of Canada, with Calgary averaging 77.6 points/game, and Winnipeg racking up just over 80 ppg. Wesmen guard Kyanna Giles leads all of Canada West and ranks second nationally with 23.1 ppg. The Dinos attack is a bit more balanced, with eight different players averaging at least 7.0 ppg, led by newcomer Louise Rouse at 15.1.

4. HOME SWEET HOME – The Dinos were only home for two series in the first half of the season but certainly made the most of playing in front of their home fans. Calgary enters the weekend a perfect 4-0 when playing inside The Jack this season, averaging over 80 points/game with an average winning margin of over 15.

5. UP NEXT – It'll be another stiff test for the Dinos to start the second half as they head to Abbotsford for a weekend series against the Fraser Valley Cascades, who are currently tied with the Dinos in the standings with an 8-2 record.
