Dinos shutdown Cougars to push record to 19 wins

CALGARY – The No. 1-ranked University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team suffocated one of the most dangerous teams in the country on Saturday night.

Fresh off setting the Canada West record with their 18th win in a row on Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, Calgary did not let up and shut out the Mount Royal Cougars 4-0 at Flames Community Arenas.

Armed with the conference's top two scorers, the Cougars were silenced by Dinos netminder Carl Stankowski, who picked up his first collegiate clean sheet with 25 saves.

Unlike a night ago when it was Mount Royal who came out firing in the first period, the Cougars were the ones trying to contain the Dinos' attack. Peppered with 17 shots on goal in the opening frame, goaltender Shane Farkas came up with several big stops, but couldn't keep Calgary off the scoresheet.

Parked in front of the goal, Marty Westhaver gave the Dinos an early lead with a goal at the 5:18 mark of the first period. Calgary doubled their lead early in the second when Jake Gricius capitalized on a power play.

The floodgates could have blown wide open late in the middle frame when Mount Royal was accessed three consecutive penalties, including a pair of four-minute minors. The Dinos controlled the offensive zone for nearly five minutes, but could not beat Farkas to seize control of the game.

The Cougars began the third period with a four-minute power play of their own but were unable to crack the Dinos' penalty kill, which was exceptional on six assignments.

Westhaver and Gricius each potted their second tallies of the evening in the final 20 minutes, while Stankowski capped off the night with an acrobatic save in the final moments to secure the shutout.

Calgary maintains a five-point lead atop the Canada West standings with a record of 21-3-0, while Mount Royal remains in a tight battle for the second spot at 16-5-3 on the season.

The Dinos return to Father David Bauer Arena next weekend where they will face the Manitoba Bisons. The Cougars take on the MacEwan Griffins in a home-and-home set, Feb 3-4.
