EDMONTON – The Calgary Dinos snapped a nearly four-year long Victoria win streak, securing top spot in Pool 1 with a 19-12 win over the Vikes.
Julia Omokhuale raced to goal in the final two minutes in the final match of the day at Foote Field, with her converted try giving Calgary a lead they would never relinquish. The loss is the first for the Vikes since March 2019, and ends a 37-match win streak in Rugby 7s. Victoria has won the last four Rugby 7s titles.
Along with Calgary, who also defeated Lethbridge (22-5) and Regina (52-5) on Saturday, the UBC Thunderbirds finished the opening day of the University of Alberta tournament with an undefeated 3-0 record.
Omokhuale also added a pair of tries for Calgary in their win over Lethbridge, to go along with her two against the Vikes.
Sofia Brussoni also added four tries for the Dinos, including a pair against Victoria.
UBC cruised past both Trinity Western (27-0) and Brandon (46-0), before knocking off the host Alberta Pandas 21-5 in Round 3. Leading the Thunderbirds was 15s star Savannah Bauder, who led UBC with five tries and one convert. Canada West Rugby 15s Player of the Year Shoshanah Seumanutafa also added two tries and five converts on Saturday.
Despite the late loss to UBC, Alberta still qualified for the semifinal round tomorrow, going 2-1 after convincing wins over Brandon (43-0) and TWU (22-7).
Sunday will feature a pair of provincial matchups in the tournament semifinal, as the Pandas will take on the Calgary Dinos at 10:54 a.m., while UBC and Victoria will clash at 11:16 a.m. All games, including the consolation semifinal games, will be streamed live on Canada West TV.
