Long homestand starts Friday against Huskies

CALGARY – After starting the season playing their first three games away from home, the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team begins a four-game homestand this weekend, starting Saturday afternoon against Saskatchewan.

Calgary will get the action at Dinosaur Field going Saturday at 2:15 p.m. against the Huskies. The weekend then wraps up Sunday with a 2:15 p.m. contest against Lethbridge as the second part of a doubleheader with the Dinos women's squad, as they square off against Winnipeg at noon.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

SEASON SO FAR
– The Dinos sit 0-1-2 through the first three games of the 2022 season. Calgary kicked things off with a pair of 1-1 splits on the road at both Alberta and MacEwan before seeing their comeback effort fall just short last weekend at Mount Royal.

POINTING THE RIGHT DIRECTION – Just three games into the season, the Dinos already have multiple players tallying more than one point. Fourth-year Derek Brust leads the way with three points after netting the opening goal of the season before adding an assist one game later. Reigning Canada West all-rookie honouree Kundai Dziwa and newcomer Amanuel Petros both have two points with one goal each on the year, while fifth-year Jeff Spolnik already has a pair of assists on the young season.

HISTORY OF SUCCESS – The Dinos will look to continue their history of success over this weekend's opponents. Last year, Calgary went a combined 3-0-1 against the Huskies and Pronghorns, outscoring the two squads by a combined 12-4. That ups Calgary's all-time record against Lethbridge to 58-10-7, and 55-18-13 against the Saskatchewan – the most games the Dinos have played against any single opponent.

A MIX OF OLD AND NEW – This year's roster features a healthy mixture of experience and incoming talent. Nine newcomers will look to gain their first collegiate minutes this season, while former All-Canadian Jake Ruschkowski leads a talented group of returners that also includes former Canada West all-star Eryk Kobza and CW all-rookie selection Kundai Dziwa.

GOING PROGareth Smith-Doyle signed a multi-year professional contract with the Calgary Cavalry FC of the Canadian Premier League earlier this summer. The former Dino and Canada West all-rookie honouree is the latest to move onto the next level after his time in the Scarlet and Gold, joining former standout Dominick Zator, currently also playing in the CPL with York United FC.
