EDMONTON – After holding their rival Calgary Dinos scoreless in a back-and-forth first half, the Dinos front row proved to be too strong, eventually prevailing with a 20-0 win over the Alberta Pandas on Saturday afternoon.
The win puts the Dinos back at .500 in conference play, as they own a 2-2 CW record. The loss is the second-straight for Alberta, who fall to 1-2 this season.
Calgary owned possession of the ball early, controlling play inside the Pandas 30-yard line for the opening eight minutes. However, the offence twice stalled right at the goal line to keep the game scoreless.
Alberta had the next great scoring change in the 27th minute, having advantage deep in Calgary's zone. However, this time it was Calgary's defence turning in the goal-line stand as the shutout continued for both squads.
Calgary's size advantage, which was evident in the front row, started to take over after a scoreless first half. Speedster
Taejah Thompson opened the scoring in the 45th with a dash to goal, before
Erin Geddie doubled the Dino lead with a try in the 58th.
The Dinos would add two more tries before the afternoon match was over, but were unable to make a successful convert in the gusting winds. Despite that, Calgary used a dominant second-half to earn the 20-point win.
The Pandas will now head on a daunting road trip, as they visit the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds next weekend. Calgary, meanwhile, will have a week off before visiting Lethbridge on October 7th.
