Dinos, Spartans battle to draw in Langley

LANGLEY, B.C.Jake Ruschkowski was credited with three saves as the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team turned in its second consecutive shutout in a 1-1 draw against Trinity Western University Saturday night from Chase Office Field.

Ruschkowski – who broke the record for most saves in program history last weekend – sees his career tally climb to 280 as he made three big saves on the night to go with a staunch performance by the Dinos defence in the tie.

With the result, Calgary finished its weekend swing in BC with four points to improve to 3-3-3 overall on the season – currently sitting third in the Prairie Division. Meanwhile, TWU moves to 5-3-2 on the year and is third in the Pacific Division.

Calgary's first threatening scoring chance of the night came in the 25th minute when Nicolas Kostiw got behind the defence and ripped a one-timed shot from outside the 18, but Alexander Cordeiro made a diving save to his left to keep the game scoreless.

Just six minutes later, it was Gianmarco Plenzik's turn for a crack at goal. The second-year midfielder drew a foul just outside the box. Taking the free kick, Plenzik curled the ball to the far post where it just missed a diving teammate and was just a foot wide from finding the back of the net.

Midway through the second half, it was Derek Brust with a shot on the counterattack, but Cordeiro once again was able to make the diving save.

Ruschkowski made the save of the night in the 78th minute. Soren Di Sabatino made a nice run for the Spartans, knifing his way from 30 yards out all the way deep into the box and fired a shot point blank, but the crashing Dinos keeper was there for the rejection in what proved to be the most threatening moment of the night.

Calgary finished the night with a 4-3 edge in shots on goal, despite seeing the Spartans finish credited with 18 total shots to the Dinos six.

The Dinos return home for a Crowchild Classic showdown with division leaders Mount Royal next Saturday at 7 p.m. from Dinosaur Field. Meanwhile, Trinity Western will head to Thompson Rivers in the first of two weekend contests next Friday.
