Cougars take down Dinos, 1-0

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars claimed a 1-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer tema Saturday evening in a tough battle between city rivals from Dinosaur Field.

The Cougars now sit at 8-0-2 overall, keeping them at the top spot in the Prairie Division. The Dinos remain third in the standings with a record of 3-4-3.

The first half of this game was a back-and-forth effort from both teams keeping the defense on guard.

Josh Flaksman ended the deadlock, scoring what proved to be the winning goal in the 59th minute. Ethan Keen sent a nice cross from the corner to the far post, where Flaksman jumped over a Dinos defender to head the ball down and in for the 1-0 lead.

Mount Royal looked to add to their lead in the 78th minute, earning a penalty kick.  Mohamed El Gandour –  the second-leading goal scorer in the nation coming into the night – took the penalty for the Cougars, blasting the ball low and to the right corner, but Dinos keeper Jake Ruschkowski was up to the task, making a phenomenal diving save to keep Calgary within striking distance.

That proved to be the final threatening scoring chance Saturday night, however, as the Cougars finished the season sweep of this year's Crowchild Classic after a 2-1 home win back on Sept. 3.

Calgary and Mount Royal finished the game level in the shot column with eight apiece, with Ruschkowski and MRU keeper Sterling Kerr each tallying three saves on the night.

"We're focused on getting into playoffs and picking up points" said Dinos head coach Brendan O'Connell when asked about upcoming goals for this team. "Once you're into playoffs, it's a lottery. We've met Mount Royal before and we've beat them, and we want to meet them again."

Up next, the Dinos will meet up with the Lethbridge Pronghorns (Oct. 14) and the Saskatchewan Huskies (Oct. 16) next weekend in a traveling weekend of away games.

The Cougars will also battle against the Pronghorns (Oct. 16) and Huskies (Oct. 14) in an opposite scheduled weekend on the road.
