CALGARY – Delaney Aikens scored a pair of second half tries to help the University of Calgary Dinos women's rugby team push past the Lethbridge Pronghorns, 36-17, in their season opener at McMahon Stadium on Friday.
Daisy Shackley scored the first try on Friday afternoon, getting the Dinos attack started in the 19th minute.
Taejah Thompson was successful on the convert, and later added three more points off a penalty.
Julia Omokhluale scored another try for the Dinos, giving them a 17-0 first half lead.
The Pronghorns built some momentum out of half time with a quick try by Keegan Brantner.
Aikens made her impact there after with back-to-back tries to build up a 22-point advantage for the Dinos.
Calgary's
Katie Salverda and Lethbridge's Mackenzie Hutten and Jenna Wright added late tries to bring the score to 36-17.
"We're asking players to step up and a whole bunch of them did, so we're really happy with the result there today," said Dinos head coach
Simon Chi.
The Dinos are back in action next weekend when they travel to the west coast for games against UBC and Victoria on Sept. 15 and 18.
The Pronghorns will take on the Alberta Pandas on Sept. 10.
