VICTORIA – Lucie Romeo scored a pair of first-half tries as the University of Victoria women's rugby team jumped out to a 21-0 lead at the break and held on from there en route to a 42-12 win over the University of Calgary Dinos Sunday morning at Wallace Field in the 12th annual Jenny Vincent Memorial Game.
With the win, the Vikes move to 1-1 on the young season, while the Dinos fall to 1-2.
Calgary opened the second-half scoring in the 52nd minute. After getting the ball down near the goal line, the Dinos used a quick restart and got the ball to
Katie Salverda, who successfully got past the defense and in for the try.
Patricia Lively added the convert to cut the lead to 21-7.
But Victoria was able to answer back. Carissa Norsten and
Sarah McWhinney both added tries just four minutes apart for the Vikes offence to push the margin back to 35-7 with just over 20 minutes remaining.
The Dinos continued to show their fight.
Julia Omokhuale found a gap in the Vikes defence for her first try on the young season to make it 35-12 in the 74th minute, before seeing Victoria respond in the game's waning moments.
The win is the third in a row for Vikes in the Jenny Vincent Memorial series, coming on the heels of Calgary's run of eight-straight wins from 2011-2018. Vincent was the driving force behind obtaining varsity status for the Dinos women's rugby program. She joined the program when it was a competitive club in the late 1990's and worked tirelessly to meet the necessary standards to elevate the program to the varsity level. As a coach, she also led the Vikes in the inaugural season of U SPORTS rugby play.
Calgary will continue its four-game road swing next weekend with a trip to Edmonton to take on the Pandas Saturday, Sept. 24 for a 1 p.m. contest at Foote Field.
