Ruschkowski sets saves record in setback

CALGARY – Logan Chung scored the game-winning goal to see the UBC Thunderbirds past the University of Calgary Dinos 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Dinosaur Field.

Fresh off a defeat at Mount Royal a day earlier, UBC recovers to earn a split and improve to 4-2-0 on the season.

Calgary falls to 2-3-2 on the year despite a history-making weekend for senior Jake Ruschkowski.

On Saturday, the Dinos' goalkeeper set a program record for most games played by a netminder. He followed that up on Sunday becoming the Dinos' record holder for career saves, now sitting at 274 – good enough for third all-time in Canada West history.

"Maybe that's not a good thing if we're giving up that many shots," joked Ruschkowski. "It's nice to have the stats, but obviously the wins mean a little bit more."

The scoring was opened by the UBC's Sebastian Dzikowski in the 16th minute as he recorded his first goal of the year, assisted by Daniel Kaiser.

Just over seven minutes later, Chung put the ball past Ruschkowski to double the Thunderbirds' lead. The goal was Chung's third of the campaign.

The Dinos clawed back to make it 2-1 in the 29th minute. The ball was fired into the box where William Omoreniye played it off his chest to Derek Brust for his second of the season.

Four cards were handed out during a feisty second half, but neither team found the scoresheet again.

Ruschkowski ended the day with six saves, while his counterpart Axel Thulin Lennselius stopped two balls.

Calgary makes their first trip out of the province next weekend, beginning in Kamloops, B.C. where they face the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Friday, Sept. 23.

The Thunderbirds return home and host the Saskatchewan Huskies on Sunday, Sept. 25.
